Cambridge Resthaven History
Cambridge Resthaven is a familiar part of the town's landscape and history, with the iconic water tower sitting right alongside us.
The Cambridge Resthaven Trust Board was set up in 1966 by community groups - Lions, Rotary, Federated Farmers, RSA, Country Women's Institute and Cambridge Borough Council. These groups committed to raise funds for a resthome in Cambridge.
After an outstanding fundraising effort from the Cambridge community, Friends of Resthaven and with considerable individual donations, the first stage of the resthome was built and opened in November 1972. Truly a community project!
Further fundraising from all these groups and the community resulted in the hospital wing built in 1979, with further developments in 2009 and 2012 from individual donations. The Resthaven on Vogel care centre now has 61 care beds for continuing and dementia care.
The first cottages were built in 1974 to cater for residents wanting to live independently, and the village has expanded through the years. Today at Resthaven on Vogel there are 80 independent living villas or cottages under Occupation Right Agreement (ORA), 3 rental units and 12 supported living apartments under ORA.
In April 2020, the Cambridge Resthaven family has expanded to add a second care centre - "Resthaven on Burns" is located in Burns Street in Leamington, Cambridge, and has 54 beds for resthome, continuing and dementia care.
In November 2022, Cambridge Resthaven marked 50 years. From small beginnings in 1972, our community organisation is proud to be celebrating 50 years of service to this wonderful community.
To celebrate 50 years, our history has been recorded in a book titled ‘From Community Spirit’ telling of the vision and determination by the community to build Cambridge’s first rest home and retirement village and how they achieved this, the story of growth through the decades, and the plans to take Resthaven forward into the next 50 years of service to the community.
